The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Venues in
Richmond & Southwest London
With over ten years of experience, I share my extensive knowledge of some of London’s most beautiful wedding venues
I’ve had the privilege of photographing over 250 weddings throughout my career, most of which have taken place right on my doorstep here in Richmond. Whether you are considering an intimate day with your nearest or an all-out celebration with 150+ guests, Richmond and the surrounding areas of Southwest London have some of the most beautiful and easily accessible wedding venues in England. As someone that has lived here for over ten years, I know the area very well and love whenever I have the opportunity of photographing weddings locally.
Getting married last year has truly given me a new appreciation of all the time and effort that goes into planning the wedding of your dreams, and there is probably no decision that will impact the feeling of your wedding day more than the venue you choose. From the grand hallways at Syon Park and Hampton Court Palace to the cosy and chic riverside setting of Petersham Nurseries and Bingham Riverhouse, there is a venue here for everyone.
There is also no shying away from the fact that weddings are more expensive than ever, so I have made sure to also include venues like York House and Orleans House Gallery, which are priced more approachably, yet still capture the magic of this beautiful area. I am a firm believer that weddings can be beautiful, no matter what the budget.
I have split all the venues in this guide up into three groupings to make it easy to navigate - The Showstoppers, Riverside Elegance and Intimately Classic. I have published separate venue guides and blogposts for many of these venues and have made sure to link all of them below. I’ve also included a venue-specific piece of advice for each location (which won’t add anything to your costs!), in an effort to be as helpful as possible in helping you discover everything that Richmond and Southwest London have to offer.
Please note that all pricing below is provided as a guide. I have provided Saturday prices for all venues, although cheaper rates are available mid-week.
Please contact the venue directly for the most up-to-date information.
Enjoy!
THE SHOWSTOPPERS
Syon Park:
London’s last private estate
Cost for a June-September Saturday wedding in 2027 with prep in the Hotspur Wing, ceremony in the Great Hall and reception in the Grand Conservatory: from £29,000
Syon Park is one of England’s most iconic venues and it truly has everything - beautifully grand indoor and outdoor spaces, luxurious on-site accommodation (that sleeps 12) and the most incredible wedding events team in Victoria, Laura and Tori who will work tirelessly to make sure that your day runs flawlessly. I have loved working with them (and the rest of the team) since being added to their recommended suppliers list in 2019, so much so that my wife and I chose to get married there last summer. It was the best day of our lives.
Your wedding will start as you get ready in the Hotspur Wing, followed by your ceremony in the Great Hall, drinks in the inner courtyard and dinner in the show-stopping Great Conservatory. Each space feels uniquely distinct from the last - the Hotspur Wing feels very British, while the Great Hall (with its stunning marble floors) has a very Italian feel to it. Unlike other venues like Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace, Syon Park is fully closed to the public during your wedding which makes it feel exceptionally private.
My top tip for a Syon Park wedding: The only type of confetti that is allowed in the inner courtyard is dried lavender, which can easily end up inside your dress and start to become itchy as the day goes on. Why not ask your guests to blow bubbles instead? If you want a wall of bubbles, I highly recommend entrusting one of your bridesmaids or ushers with a bubble cannon. We did this at our wedding and it looked incredible in the photos! Just make sure to test the bubbles on the fabric type of your dress ahead of time, to make sure they don’t stain.
Hampton Court Palace:
The most regal venue in London
Cost for a Saturday wedding in 2027 with ceremony in the Little Banqueting House and reception in The Garden Room: from £9,600
Cost for a Saturday wedding in 2027 with ceremony in The Garden Room and reception in The Great Hall: from £24,000
Hampton Court Palace is another stunning venue in Southwest London and it’s been a privilege to be on their approved suppliers list since 2020. There is only one Hampton Court Palace, and I can’t think of any other wedding venue that has this much history attached to it. It’s beautiful and provides a variety of locations which you can use for your wedding day, all at different price points. The most affordable option is to have your ceremony in the Little Banqueting House (which is a work of art in itself!) followed by a reception in The Garden Room. At the other end of the spectrum is a ceremony in The Garden Room followed by a reception in King Henry VIII’s jaw-dropping Great Hall.
When it comes to the getting ready part of the day, a few brides I’ve worked with have hired out the Georgian House, a beautiful 18th century building which sits on the grounds. Most couples, though, decide to get ready at The Mitre or The King’s Arms, both within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the venue. I once had a bride who hired a private boat from The Mitre to her ceremony in the Little Banqueting House - so fun!
There is no ‘standard’ Hampton Court Palace wedding structure and almost all of the spaces can be incorporated to create your dream wedding schedule. It is also quite common for couples to get married in a nearby church and take a bus (or a boat) to Hampton Court Palace for the rest of the day. Regardless of which spaces you choose, you will have access to the Palace, the gardens and the many gorgeous staircases for couple portraits. Do keep in mind that the palace stays open during weddings, so although the immediate area around the Little Banqueting House and Garden Room will be private, you will run into some members of the public as we go and take photos. This has never been a problem though, and everyone is always thrilled to see a recently married couple.
My top tip for a Hampton Court Palace wedding: Hampton Court Palace is a beautiful, but very large venue. Keep this in mind when planning your initial timings for the day, particularly if your guests will be walking from the Little Banqueting House to The Garden Room, for example. The benefit to this is that doing some couple photos during this time is perfect, because no one will notice that you’re gone.
Kew Gardens:
London’s botanical gem
Cost for a Saturday wedding in 2027 with ceremony and reception at Cambridge Cottage: from £5,400
Cost for a Saturday wedding in 2027 with ceremony in the Nash Conservatory and reception in The Orangery: from £16,200
Cost for a Saturday wedding in 2027 with ceremony in the Nash Conservatory and reception in The Temperate House: from £28,200
If enchanting landscapes appeal to you more than palatial conservatories and halls, Kew Gardens might be the perfect venue for you. Even though this is London’s largest botanical garden, The Nash Conservatory, The Orangery and its many glasshouses help it retain a clear, architectural charm.
For a few years now gardening has been one of my main hobbies (still waiting for my David Austin Roses loyalty card!), so I am absolutely thrilled whenever I have the opportunity to photograph a wedding at Kew. Many of the couples I have photographed at Kew Gardens have a similar interest in either nature or sustainability, which is always really nice. Depending on which season of the year you choose for your wedding, the plants will look vastly different, so do keep this in mind. Still, the glasshouses mean that even in the winter you can easily find a beautiful, green backdrop.
My top tip for a Kew Gardens wedding: Come up with three to five locations you’d like to visit during couple portraits. Depending on the time of day and the location of your ceremony, the staff at Kew Gardens will suggest which ones to prioritise and which order to do them in. They normally provide a buggy to take us between locations, meaning you spend less time walking and more time with your guests.
RIVERSIDE ELEGANCE
Bingham Riverhouse:
London’s best venue with river views
Bingham Riverhouse pricing is unavailable online
For the riverside elegance category, I’m swapping architectural masterpieces for chic and considered venues which are smaller in size and feel more modern and contemporary. The first on the list is Bingham Riverhouse, a fusion of a boutique hotel with gorgeous, lush views over the river and a fantastic, in-house food offering. In the summer, the garden captures the sun perfectly as it sets over the Thames. When you’re here, it almost feels as if you’re in a friend’s garden.
Most couples that I have photographed at the Bingham decide to get ready on site, although different, often larger rooms are available just a 3-minute drive away at the Richmond Hill Hotel, Petersham Hotel or Harbour Hotel. Most ceremonies that I’ve photographed at Bingham take place on their lush lawn which manages to maintain an intimate feel even with 60 guests. The nearby tree creates the perfect shade, even on a sunny day. If bad weather is forecast there is no reason to panic, as they are able to host your ceremony indoors as well.
After having your drinks and canapes on the lawn, all your guests will be ushered inside for the wedding breakfast and speeches. You’ll head back outside to enjoy the garden once again while the room is turned around for the first dance, and if you catch good weather in the summer, the light is absolutely stunning at this time. The dancefloor at Bingham is smaller than at other venues, but I really like this because it creates a more intimate feel to your photos. It also means that you don’t need a lot of people on the dancefloor for it to feel like the party is in full swing.
My top tip for a Bingham Riverhouse wedding: If you want a group shot with all of your guests, I highly recommend doing this right after you have walked back down the aisle at the end of the ceremony. Because of the tiered layout of the garden, all your guests simply need to turn around from where they are standing by their seats and look towards me at the top of the steps.
Petersham Nurseries:
London’s best secret garden wedding venue
Cost for Saturday day hire of The Kitchen Garden Room (pictured above) - £3,000
Cost for Saturday day hire of The Garden Greenhouse - £5,000
Cost for Saturday evening hire of the Central Greenhouse - £15,000
Cost for Saturday evening hire of The Restaurant - £25,000
Petersham Nurseries is the only venue on this list which isn’t licensed to host ceremonies, but instead provides a variety of beautiful spaces for your reception and wedding breakfast. The nurseries perfectly capture the charm of English countryside living with the accessibility of a London wedding venue - it calls itself "a secluded haven in Richmond". Part Michelin Green Star restaurant, part upmarket garden nursery, it is a one-of-a-kind location with an undeniably rustic, country-chic charm. It feels lived in, in the best possible way. I have visited countless times for lunch and photographed a beautiful wedding reception in their Kitchen Garden Room, which you can see above.
Petersham Nurseries is an excellent option if you want your day to feel dynamic and to take place across various venues. Since you can’t legally get married here, most couples decide to have their ceremony at York House, Orleans House Gallery or a nearby church such as St Peter’s, which is within walking distance. Really, you can get as creative as you want! Why not have your ceremony in central London and hire a double-decker bus to drive everyone to Richmond? We had a double-decker bus on our wedding day and it was one of the best decisions we made.
The couple whose wedding I photographed in The Kitchen Garden Room held their ceremony at Orleans House Gallery and walked to Petersham Nurseries along the riverside - it’s about a 20 minute walk with with a gorgeous ride on the Hammerton’s Ferry (which is only £2 per person). Andy, who runs the ferry and lives there, is brilliant! Afterwards everyone headed to a private room at The Marlborough on Richmond Hill, where another 30 or so friends joined them for their evening celebrations.
My top tip for a Petersham Nurseries wedding: Head over to Petersham Meadow and the riverside for your couple portraits - the light in the evening is absolutely stunning, and if your wedding is in the summer, you might even have a friendly cow posing alongside you on the meadow.
INTIMATELY CLASSIC
York House:
The best registry office in London
Cost for a Saturday civil ceremony in any room at York House - £581.60
It might cost less than £600 to get married at York House, but don’t be fooled - this to me is the best registry office in London. Built in the early 1600s for a courtier to King Charles I, it was purchased by Richmond council in 1924 and has served as the main hub of civil ceremonies in the area since 2015. Even though it serves as the council’s offices, York House retains the charm of a manor house thanks to its impressive architecture (spot the French fleur-de-lys hiding in the stonework) and vast, well-appointed grounds. Other London registry offices like Chelsea and Marylebone are gorgeous when you’re inside, but there is no escaping the hustle and bustle of central London the second you step back through the front door.
The two most popular rooms for ceremonies are the Loggia Room and the Winter Garden Room. The Loggia Room was recently refurbished and has a modern, contemporary feeling to it. The Winter Garden Room, on the other hand, was inspired by French conservatories and has an antique domed glass roof and gorgeous marble chessboard flooring. The real standout feature of York House though, is the grounds which stretch all the way down to the river and provide endless opportunity for couple photos (including a gorgeous stone bridge - see above). Although open to the public, they are rarely crowded.
Because of York House’s proximity to Richmond and Twickenham, there are so many places you can go to afterwards for your reception. You can head into Richmond and take advantage of the beautiful, private terrace at Scott’s where Pierre, the manager, will look after you brilliantly. If you want something a little bit more laidback, The Crown pub in St. Margaret’s has a very nice private room and does excellent food. Why not take the ferry over the river and walk to Petersham Nurseries or Bingham Riverhouse? The Dysart, a Michelin-starred restaurant, is another great, local gem where Barny and his team go above and beyond.
My top tip for a York House wedding: Because it’s a public space, there is nothing to keep you from bringing your own drinks and nibbles for after the ceremony. Lidiya and Rebecca’s families (above) organised the most incredible cheeseboard!
"And the photos are amazing! It's incredible how many photos of how many people Michael managed to capture at our wedding, giving us a record not only of the parts of the day that we were involved in, but also many smaller moments of guests that we were not there for". - Colin & Martha
Orleans House Gallery:
The best value grand wedding venue in London
Cost for a Saturday civil ceremony at Orleans House Gallery - £1,740
If you are after the grand feeling of the ceremony spaces you’d find in country manor houses, Orleans House Gallery delivers it at a fraction of the price. The Octagon Room is one of the last remnants of an ornate, Palladian villa which once occupied the land around it. What’s left serves a public art gallery owned by Richmond council, which is why it is priced more accessibly than other ceremony rooms with this level of grandeur. The floor to ceiling windows flood the entire space with light, so that even in the depth of winter you will have beautifully lit wedding photos. Can you tell I’m a fan of marble chessboard flooring?
Although the Octagon Room will be private for the duration of your booking, the adjacent art gallery stays open to the public. Still, as it is nestled by the riverside, I have never found it to be particularly busy. Most bookings at the Octagon Room tend to be for two hours - 30 minutes for the ceremony and 90 minutes for drinks and canapes which most couples choose to have outside, weather permitting. The two-hour booking includes access to a small on-site kitchen, which means that you can bring in a caterer to serve drinks and canapes. The fact that there is no corkage fee is very appealing and what makes this, in my opinion, one of the best value wedding venues in London.
Similarly to York House, most couples whose weddings I photograph here choose to host their wedding breakfast elsewhere. As I mentioned above, you can head to one of Richmond or Twickenham’s many restaurants, or jump on the Hammerton’s Ferry over to Petersham Nurseries. Alternatively, you can book a Turks boat to take you and all your guests from the Hammerton’s Pier downstream to either The Mitre in Hampton Court or The Teddington Wharf. All are wonderful options.
My top tip for an Orleans House Gallery wedding: If you are booking a double-decker bus to take your guests to your next venue, do not book this to pick you up from Orleans House Gallery - the roads and turnings are too narrow and it won’t be able to make it. Instead, have it wait in front of The White Swan pub, which is just a two minute walk away.
